Allen Carden, Ph.D., professor of liberal arts and history and degree completion academic coordinator, has published a book with The University of Tennessee Press. Freedom’s Delay: America’s Struggle for Emancipation, 1776-1865, examines the campaign to end slavery throughout the nation, presenting a systematically structured national overview of African American liberation and examining major political, literary, legal, moral and social emancipatory efforts made by black and white, free and enslaved individuals. “Freedom’s Delay presents the facts, dispelling many of the myths typically associated with slavery and abolition, particularly that racial servitude was of little consequence in the North,” according to the publisher’s release.
