A new lectureship honors a lifetime of contributions to Fresno Pacific University.
In his 35 years at FPU, Edmund Janzen served with distinction and passion. Steeped in knowledge of the Scriptures, he was also full of ideas on and stories about applying its eternal truth in everyday ways. Students knew Janzen as a teacher who cared not only about the content of his courses, but also the course of their lives. Those who took Janzen up on his frequent invitations for informal discussions received thoughtful counsel on both the biblical text and the Christian life.
But Janzen's contributions did not stop with individual advice, as he strove to live the university's mission to strengthen the church and improve society: he developed the contemporary Christian ministries major; as university president from 1975-1985 he wrote "Broadening the Base," a plan to expand the outreach of Fresno Pacific University; and he is known internationally as a pastor and speaker.
The Edmund Janzen Lectureship in Biblical Studies is intended to promote careful scholarship in biblical interpretation as well as the witness of the Christian church. The lectures are intended for university faculty and students, pastors and lay leaders. Lectures will occur each spring beginning in 2005 and alternate annually between scholars of the old and new testaments.
