FPU pool to re-open following successful inspection

Fresno Pacific University is pleased to announce that this afternoon, Wednesday, January 17, 2018, the Fresno County Health Department inspected and approved the reopening of the university pool on the main campus. The pool will reopen tomorrow morning.

This follows the replacement and testing of pool equipment, including a new water flow sensor, Tuesday. In addition, we are adding equipment for redundancy and making procedural changes, including the circumstances under which maintenance and other work is scheduled.

The manufacturer and the university had determined a defective water flow sensor was the cause of the January 9 incident when chlorine was pumped into the system prematurely while members of the swim team were practicing. In all, 15 student-athletes were treated by FPU sports medicine staff and first responders, with 12 being taken to area hospitals. None of the student-athletes were admitted to the hospital, several have seen the FPU team physician or other medical professionals for follow-up appointments and sports-medicine staff continue to monitor everyone affected. The majority of those affected have returned to full swimming activities.

Thanks and appreciation go to athletics coaches and staff, first-response and medical professionals and everyone in the FPU community for their help and concern.
