Fresno Pacific science student wins summer scholarship at University of Illinois

Catherine Jalomo has been accepted as a Snyder Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chemistry Department for Summer 2019. The senior chemistry major from Fresno will have the opportunity to spend 10 weeks in fulltime research experience at the Urbana (IL) campus. The Snyder Scholar fellowship provides recipients with a $5,000 stipend, travel reimbursement and university housing.

An FPU Paragon Scholar, Jalomo will perform research in the lab of Professor Steven Zimmerman, Ph.D., and will have the opportunity to interact with members of other research groups over the summer. Research in the Zimmerman group focuses on areas at the interface of chemistry and biology or chemistry and materials and work in the subfields of biomedicine, chemical biology or materials chemistry. The scholarship began more than 20 years ago, when students and friends of Harold R. Snyder established an endowment fund in his honor to support undergraduate students with an interest in organic chemistry. Applicants must have completed two semesters of organic chemistry lecture and two chemistry-related laboratory courses and be committed to pursuing graduate studies in organic chemistry.
