Fresno Pacific University is commemorating Black History Month through chapel services, artistic presentations and student activities. All events take place on the main FPU campus, 1717 S. Chestnut Ave., Fresno.

The public is invited to a “Staged Reading of Langston Hughes,” at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, in the Warkentine Culture and Arts Center. Poetry by a giant of the Harlem Renaissance as read by FPU students Judith Flores Mora, Xochitl Gamino, McKayla Garcia, Vanessa Gomes, Alyson Lehrer, Alana Mendes, Katelyn Onyekwelu and Aziah Vang. Admission is free.

Chapel services take on several issues:

  • “A Taste of Black History” at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, in BC Lounge.
  • “Till Victory is Won: Exploring Luke 18:1-8” at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, in Warkentine Culture and Arts Center. A special focus on the words to “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often called the “Black national anthem.” 
  • “The Experience of Black Men in America & The Impact on Their Mental Health (Part 1)” at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 16, in BC Lounge.
  • “The Experience of Black Men in America & The Impact on Their Mental Health (Part 2)” at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 23, in BC Lounge.

The Division of Student Life offers “Legacy Quest: Discovering Black Excellence” Wednesday and Thursday, February 28-29. This two-day scavenger hunt will take place all around the main campus. Participants will find historical figures around campus, snap a selfie and share on Instagram.
