FPU institute provides the basics to managing conflict

Professionals in any field—legal, education, government, church and ministry, commercial or non-profit—are invited to the next Basic Institute in Conflict Management and Mediation sponsored by the Fresno Pacific University Center for Peacemaking & Conflict Studies (CPACS). Sessions will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. March 9-13, 2015, at a new location: the FPU North Fresno Center, 5 River Park Place West, Suite 201, Room 307, Fresno.

"In a world where divisions and strife seem to be escalating, there is an increasingly urgent need to learn the art and skill of conflict management. Conflict stresses everything from interpersonal relationships and communities to churches and nations, and this course can help provide those skills needed to heal those divisions," said Greg Zubacz, Ph.D., CPACS director.

This 30-hour training teaches the basic understandings and skills needed to manage and resolve conflict. The institute provides insights and strategies that deal with conflicts between individuals and among groups in the workplace, church, school or home. Instruction draws from the social sciences and biblical examples as well as the theory, methods and practical skills of listening and mediation. A training manual is included.

Leading the institute are Zubacz and Duane Ruth-Heffelbower, J.D. In addition to directing CPACS, Zubacz is assistant professor of peacemaking and conflict studies and faculty member in criminology and restorative justice studies. He has served in ministerial, educational and governmental positions in his native Canada. More on Zubacz at fresno.edu/faculty/gregory-zubacz.

Ruth-Heffelbower is associate professor of peacemaking and conflict studies and faculty in criminology and restorative justice and leadership studies, with more than 40 years of experience in conflict management and restorative justice in the U.S. and internationally.
