For the third year in a row, FPU student journalists took home multiple awards at the annual California College Media Association (CCMA) banquet March 2 in La Jolla.
The Syrinx student newspaper won three awards: first place for Best Photo Illustration, second place for Best Newspaper Column and second place for Best Headlines. FPU competed alongside other California schools including Pepperdine, Biola, Cal Baptist, Loyola Marymount, Chapman and several other universities in the B-division comprised of four-year schools with under 10,000 students.
- Senior Madison McGinnis, graphics editor, won first place for Best Photo Illustration for her “Disintegrating Mac Miller” graphic artwork.
- First-year student Hannah Hamm, arts and entertainment editor, won second place for Best Column for her opinion piece “Respecting diversities you may not know about: a voice from the adopted population.”
- Athletics Editor Pablo Villagrana, senior, won second place for Best Headline Portfolio. His portfolio included “Women’s tennis returns for a second serve” and “Bittersweet SWIMphony: FPU coach leaves after six years.”
Adam Schrag, Ph.D., Syrinx advisor and associate professor of communication, was also inducted to the CCMA board during the convention. He will join other media advisers from across the state to promote college media at California universities and community colleges.
The CCMA banquet took place in conjunction with the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) annual midwinter national journalism conference, February 28-March 2. A group of 11 Syrinx staff members were among 116 college media outlets from the U.S. and Canada at sessions with media and advertising professionals, including journalists from the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, on topics including reporting, social media, data journalism, integrated student media, business management, photojournalism, design and leadership. This year’s convention was also held jointly with College Media Business and Advertising Managers (CMBAM).
