FPU joins Day at the Capitol to support Cal Grants

Drumming up support for the Cal Grant state financial aid program was the goal of a group from Fresno Pacific University who met with California legislative staff members February 28, 2017.

Making the trip to Sacramento were student Michael Mendez and Mark Isaac, vice president for advancement and university relations; Diana Mock, vice president for integrated marketing; Chad Boling, associate director of financial aid; Slavek Gladysh, student financial services advisor; and Jorge Lopez, director of regional campus operations.

As part of “Day at the Capitol,” The FPU group met with representatives from Assemblymembers Adam Gray, Joaquin Arambula, Rudy Salas, Devon Mathis and from Minority Leader Jean Fuller as well as State Senators Andy Vidak and Anthony Cannella. The reason for the trip, organized by the Association of Independent California Colleges & Universities (AICCU), was to oppose the proposed $1,000 cut in Cal Grants for students at private colleges and universities.

Quick facts:

  • 186,000 undergraduates are enrolled at AICCU institutions

  • 27,000 Cal Grant students are enrolled at AICCU institutions

  • 45 percent of AICCU Cal Grant students are the first in their family to attend college
