Madera Community Hospital educators to be honored at FPU dinner

Fresno Pacific University will honor the professionals at Madera Community Hospital (MCH) who make the Family Nurse Practitioner Partnered Residency Education (FNP PREP) Program possible with a Preceptors Recognition Dinner April 8, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at the FPU North Fresno Campus, 5 River Park Place West, Fresno.

FNP PREP is an innovative academic-clinical partnership between the hospital and the university that prepares nurse practitioners to serve rural Central Valley patients with limited access to care. Preceptors are medical providers who supervise FPU nurse practitioner students as they practice in their offices.

“The recipients have mentored and clinically educated many of FPU’s student nurse practitioners for the last two years and/or assisted in the successful implementation of the clinical program. Many thanks to these clinical partners of FNP PREP,” said Lisa Hood, DNP, FNP, assistant professor or nursing and director of the master of science in nursing and family nurse practitioner program at FPU.

Nurse practitioners are essential due to the short supply of primary care medical providers, particularly in smaller communities in Central California where families may drive long distances and wait hours for medical care. With their focus on managing illness and preventing disease, nurse practitioners have graduate nursing degrees and the advanced practice skills needed to serve these communities. FNP PREP offers students a “residency” entirely through MCH, its rural health care clinics and it’s community physicians.

FNP PREP came out of conversations between Hood and Karen Paolinelli, CEO at MCH, herself a nurse practitioner. Being honored at the dinner are:
