A program to support first-generation Sunbirds released its first flock April 28 with dinner on the Seminary Green at the main Fresno Pacific University campus.

The First to Fly Sendoff was for seniors who are the first in their families to graduate from a university. About 130 students signed up for First to Fly, open to all first-generation students at FPU, whether in traditional undergraduate, bachelor’s degree completion or graduate programs.

First-generation students are an important part of FPU, where 63% of traditional undergraduates are the first in their families to pursue a four-year degree. Welcoming these students and helping them succeed is part of the university’s mission to its region, as Valley counties, home to the majority of FPU students, score well below state and national averages in the percentage of people with bachelor’s degrees or higher.

First to Fly activities throughout the school year included bi-monthly lunches and connections with the Career Development Office, Pacific Counseling, the Student Financial Services Office as well as other resources. Each participant was also paired with a "Sunny Guide," an upperclassmen or graduate student who is also a first-gen student. These mentors meet with students and act as contacts, answering any questions they may have. Leading First to Fly is Brianna Martinez, student success and equity specialist.
