An association of fellow educators gave another Fresno Pacific University its highest vote of confidence, reaccrediting the university for 10 years.
FPU has made progress in finances, enrollment and leadership, according to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). "The team found a university deeply committed to teaching excellence and student support, operating in a climate of collegiality and dialogue on important issues," the commission stated in a letter to FPU President D. Merrill Ewert. "These are important accomplishments that provide a strong foundation for the future of FPU."
The commission also commended FPU on its student-centered environment, featuring accessible and supportive faculty, faith-based collaboration and interdisciplinary programs. The university has been accredited since 1965. "WASC could not have given us a stronger affirmation," Ewert said. "Ten years is the longest term that can be given."
Ewert credited faculty and staff for their work. "Many people were involved in researching and preparing documents and meeting with the review team. It couldn't have been done without them," he said.
WASC is one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. The Western region covers California and Hawaii, the territories of Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands and areas of the Pacific and East Asia.
Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental, process whereby colleges and universities examine one another. Teams of educators travel to institutions, gather information and make recommendations before awarding accreditation for periods from five-10 years. The goal is to help institutions develop and sustain effective educational programs and assure the educational community, the general public and other organizations that an accredited institution meets high standards of quality and effectiveness.
