A new way to look at clothing, art and trash is coming to Fresno Pacific University in its first ArtHop event of the 2023-24 academic year.

The opening reception for “Beyond Trashique®” will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2023, in Ewert Art Gallery of Warkentine Culture and Arts Center, 4838 E. Butler Ave., Fresno, part of the main FPU campus. Admission is free to the reception and the exhibit, which continues through September 22, 2023. ArtHop is an activity of the Fresno Arts Council. On exhibit will be unique, wearable art made from trash. All garments were featured over the last 10 years in the Fresno Art Museum’s fashion show fundraiser, Trashique®. The artists are Samuel and Laura Tekunoff, both members of FPU and the Fresno art communities.

The artists

Samuel Tekunoff has participated in Trashique® as an artist since 2010. He enjoys the challenge of transforming discarded materials into something interesting and creative. Outside of ®Trashique, Samuel integrates his background in fine arts and graphic design with his expertise in marketing for agriculture. At Oro Agri, a global manufacturer of crop protection and nutrient products, he oversees marketing operations for North America. In 2005, he co-founded the marketing studio Wolf Nectar. As an educator, Samuel has taught graphic design at FPU for 10 years. He enjoys encouraging the next generation of designers to think about the interplay between design and marketing and communication.

Laura Tekunoff joined Trashique® as an artist in 2013 and has been featured in each show since. She enjoys using unconventional materials to create wearable art. Laura is also a textile artist, quilter and graphic designer. In her textiles, Laura combines her background in graphic design with bold color palettes to create unique, one-of-a-kind, quilted art and heirlooms, incorporating texture through hand quilting and layers of threads. At FPU, Laura is the events coordinator and president of the Staff Caucus. In 2010, Laura became a co-owner and partner in Wolf Nectar, a marketing studio. In her free time, she enjoys reading, baking and sewing.

Trashique®

Trashique® is the Fresno Art Museum’s signature fundraiser where local artists turn trash into artful, wearable garments and present them on a runway fashion show produced by FAM staff, community artists and volunteers. Pieces are produced mainly by local artists and interpret the work of a selection of famous artists. The event debuted in 2010 and was produced again 2012-18, 2020 and 2022. More at fresnoartmuseum.org/events/trashique/
