This year a record 70 students qualified to be President's Scholars, and as part of their leadership class taught by President D. Merrill Ewert they were introduced to the challenges faced by the region, and some of the people and agencies that help. On August 23, the first two day of class, they toured the Lowell community in downtown Fresno with Beth Eckloff-Paz (BA '05) and Ivan Paz (BA '09) who serve with the Fresno Institute for Urban Leadership (FIFUL), a ministry begun by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, then visited the Reedley offices of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) West Coast; MCC an international Christian relief agency. Back in Fresno, they visited Juvenile Hall and heard David Gottlieb, presiding juvenile judge. The next day the group toured the Community Food Bank in Fresno (pictured) and helped city parks staff clean up two of its facilities.
