"After prayerful consideration, Virginia and I have made the decision to relocate back to Southern California to be closer to our families and to explore new opportunities. We have resigned our positions at Fresno Pacific, and look forward to the next season of life that God has purposed for us," Menjares said. "The university is well-positioned for a very bright future under the leadership of an extremely competent team of vice presidents and other senior leaders. Virginia and I wish the people of Fresno Pacific and the Valley—many of whom have become trusted and lifelong friends—the very best. The last two years have blessed us in many ways, and for this we are thankful."
Board Chair John Thiesen thanked Menjares for his service, reflecting on the pastoral presence Menjares embodied as 11th president. "When Pete joined us, he brought with him a new perspective on Christian higher education," Thiesen said. "His previous accomplishments in the areas of diversity and unity were reflected throughout his presidency. In fact, he modeled those characteristics and encouraged thoughtful discussion regarding related issues."
Virginia Menjares, as the president's wife, served as an ambassador for the university, working with students, staff and others within the FPU community. She and the president often made appearances and served on panels as a couple.
Provost Stephen Varvis, Ph.D., and the cabinet will direct day-to-day university operations. The board will address future leadership at a special meeting September 16, 2014.
Menjares was appointed president of FPU March 2, 2012. He came to FPU from Biola University, where over an 18-year career his posts included vice provost for faculty development and academic effectiveness, associate provost for diversity leadership, education department chair and associate professor of education. He has also served with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities as a conference presenter and consultant on intercultural competencies and as a senior fellow in the Leadership Development Institute.
Menjares earned a Ph.D. in Education: Language, Literacy and Learning from the University of Southern California; an M.A. in Education: Teaching and Curriculum from California State University, Dominguez Hills; and a B.A. in Religion: Pastoral Ministries from Vanguard University.
