Activities
• A panel of victims of serious violence will be convened by Lisa Rea, director of the Restorative Justice Project, based in Sacramento.
• Workshops will address victim recovery, strategies for collaboration on legislation, embedding restorative justice in structures, church-based victim offender reconciliation programs and other topics.
• Janka: A Tale of Survival—A one-woman play tells the horrors of the Holocaust through the eyes of survivor Janka Festinger as portrayed by her daughter-in-law, actress Janice Noga, and written by her son, Oscar Speace.
Speakers
John Dussich
John Dussich, Ph. D., directs the Tokiwa International Victimology Institute at Tokiwa University in Mito, Japan, where he has taught victimology, victim services and comparative criminal justice systems. He is also a fulltime associate professor at California State University, Fresno. He has been a university-level educator at 11 institutions and has experience in corrections, law enforcement and victim services. He has written several books, founded the National Organization of Victim Assistance and is founding secretary general of the World Society of Victimology.
Mario Gaboury
Mario Thomas Gaboury, Ph. D., directs the Center for the Study of Crime Victims' Rights, Remedies and Resources in the School of Public Safety and Professional Studies at the University of New Haven, where he is associate professor of criminal justice and chair of the department of human services and professional counseling. He was formerly deputy director, Office for Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice, and legislative specialist for the National Organization for Victim Assistance.
Arthur Wint
Arthur V. N. Wint, J.D., is a professor of criminology and coordinator of the peace and conflict studies program at CSUF. He is a board member and mediator for the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program of the Central Valley, Inc. He has served on the ethics committee of Children's Hospital Central California and the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Commission.
Bernadette Muscat
Bernadette T. Muscat, Ph. D., is an assistant professor in criminology at CSUF. She advocates for victims of domestic violence and is working with the California Office of Emergency Services Victims Witness Division to create a program to train victim service practitioners. She is also involved in developing the Violence Against Women Prevention Project at CSUF.
