Fresno Pacific University music groups feature students in church concerts

Churches are the setting for two concerts by Fresno Pacific University ensembles.

The university Concert Choir will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday, October 28, in Campus Baptist Church, 4710 N. Maple, Fresno. The Pacific Chamber Singers and Musica Pacifica Baroque Orchestra will appear in St. Anne's Chapel, 1550 N. Fresno at 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 30. Both events are free.

A pair of student soloists will be featured October 28: Tiffany Weller, a freshman from Bakersfield, will play flute, while Robin Schwamb, a junior music major from Selma, will sing.

Musica Pacifica Baroque is a 20-piece orchestra including harpsichord, flutes, oboe and strings. Wayne Huber, music faculty, conducts the group, which will play selections including William Boyce's "Third Symphony," Bach's "Second Orchestral Suite" and Hayden's "Passion Symphony."

Pacific Chamber Singers is a 17-member choir directed by Roy Klassen, music department chair. Among the pieces on the program will be "Vom Himmel Hoch," by Michael Praetorius; "Prepare the Way," arranged by Magrareta Jalkeus; and "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy," by Tchaikovsky, arranged by Jeff Funk.

"Sing Unto the Lord" is the Concert Choir theme, and the name of one of the Oct. 30 selections. Others include "Festival Magnificat,""Prayer of Saint Francis," "Alleluia! I Bring You News of Great Joy," "And Can it Be?," "Ride On, King Jesus" and "Christ Be With You." The 35-voice ensemble is conducted by Klassen, who earned his doctorate from Arizona State University.
