Selections in many styles highlight upcoming San Joaquin Chorale concert

A requiem, madrigals and contemporary settings of traditional texts are on the program for the next San Joaquin Chorale concert, set for 7 p.m. Saturday, November 17, at Sierra Lutheran Church, Auberry.

Formerly known as Fresno Pacific Chorale, the San Joaquin Chorale is a community group of about 30 voices conducted by Roy Klassen, Fresno Pacific University faculty. Membership is by audition.

Among the selections will be "Requiem Mass" by Kevin Memley, the chorale accompanist, as well as versions of "Alleluya Psallate" and the madrigal "All Ye Who Music Love." A setting by Paul Aitken of the John McCrae poem "Flanders Field" will also be presented. This composition won the 1999 American Choral Directors Association Student Composition Award. 

Klassen currently serves as chair of the FPU music department, where he has been on the faculty since 1977. A respected performer and teacher, he earned his doctorate at Arizona State University.
