Fresno Pacific University students, faculty and staff joined together on November 20 for an annual FPU tradition, the Thanksgiving Luncheon. 575 attended the luncheon held in the Special Events Center on the FPU main campus, 1717 S. Chestnut Ave., Fresno.
Jeff Jones, emcee for the event, opened by noting this was the 30th Thanksgiving Luncheon he had attended. Jones then reminded all in attendance to take time to pause and thank God for the blessings He has bestowed on us, as well as the blessings He will continue to bestow on us.
A traditional part of the luncheon is the Parade of Nations, during which students carry the flag of each nation represented in the FPU student body. Sunny the Sunbird led the way as 31 students carried the flag of their nation, including the United States.
Next at the podium was student Adrienne Rangel, who gave the blessing before the meal. She encouraged everyone to “pause to remember this season is centered on gratitude.”
Tables were then released to load up their plates with a full Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings. Because of the efficiency of the event staff, as well as the staff from Provider ensuring the food was kept refilled, all 575 attendees were served and back at their seats within 25 minutes.
FPU President André Stephens, Ph.D., came to the podium to give remarks. He began by thanking the board of trustees for their generous support for the Thanksgiving Luncheon. In years past, attendees were required to purchase tickets, but the event is now covered by the board members’ personal donations, allowing all students, faculty and staff to attend the luncheon for free.
Stephens also thanked all those involved in making the event a success. “Beth and I are so proud to be a part of this beautiful community,” Stephens said. “Students, your success is our success, and we are grateful for you.” He then thanked all the faculty and staff, saying, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for loving God and loving our students and loving the work that you have been called to do.”
The event concluded with a prayer from Timothy Geddert, Ph.D., vice chair of the board executive committee.
