Student chosen for inspiring story

The goal of the series is to foster, cultural and community pride and work to reduce stereotypes in the Central Valley. The project is part of a national PBS project, the Latino Americans documentary series.

Chavez, a political science major who came to FPU from Madera, was nominated by Yammilette Rodriguez (MA ‘06), a member of the FPU Board of Trustees and director of programs, Central Valley, for the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI). She cited Chavez's work at YLI and as a youth leader at United Faith Christian Fellowship, Mennonite Brethren. He is also an FPU student senator.

The Latino Americans in the Central Valley Profiles project highlights young Latinos in several areas: student, volunteerism, philanthropy, high achievement, arts and culture, athletics, inspiration and business/innovation. Valley PBS chose Chavez to represent inspiration.

"We were very impressed with your achievements and are certain your story will inspire and set an example for other young Latinos in the Central Valley," Diana L. Enriquez, Valley PBS corporate and community relations development director, wrote to Chavez.
